– Expert conference on rural areas
– Umweltbundesamt on planetary health and nursing

[Full Script]

Good morning and welcome to our Update from Berlin for the twenty-second week of the year. We’re a day late, but only because yesterday was a bank-holiday here in Germany.

Given that bank-holiday today is going to be short and sweet, as neither the Bundestag or the Bundesrat are in session. In fact the Bundestag will only gather again for the week of June 12th and the Bundesrat will meet on that Friday, June 16th.

So what is happening? Well, there’s a bunch of conferences and expert hearings coming up.

Climate & Agriculture Events

For example, on Thursday, the Food and Agriculture Ministry will hold an expert conference on the economic perspectives of rural areas. The Umweltbundesamt – the German Environmental Agency – is also holding various sessions. For example they are hosting a conference on planetary health and nursing on Wednesday. A day later, on Thursday, they will concern themselves with the rewetting of moores or marshes. Given these ecosystems’ unique ability to store vast amounts of CO2, preserving them will have a disproportionately positive impact on Germany’s environmental footprint.

German FED (Bundesbank) on ETFs and Germany’s economic Strategy vis-à-vis China

The Bundesbank – Germany’s FED – is also hosting conferences. Today (on Tuesday) they are organizing an event on the growing significance and potential risks of ETFs. Keep in mind that less than 20% of Germans own stocks compared to around 60% in the USA or 40% in the UK. Tomorrow the Bundesbank will look to the far east, as they are hosting an event on whether Germany needs an economic strategy vis-à-vis China.

Copyright Court Hearing

While on YouTube you might have heard about the “fair use” doctrine that is a significant element of U.S. copyright law, Germany’s highest civil court will hear a case on Thursday about sampling of copyrighted music in Germany. The case was brought by the band Kraftwerk.

That’s it for this week. As always, please leave a like or comment on the video – it really helps us. And if you got any feedback or questions, we’re also here to help!
